From the Worthless, Useless but Interesting file... Unchained Melody-great song--Did you ever wonder about the the song title, where unchained does not appear in lyrics? Then read on. While this song was written in the 1930s, it has become one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, by some estimates having spawned over 500 versions in hundreds of different languages. The July 1965 version by The Righteous Brothers became a jukebox standard for the late 20th century, achieving a second round of great popularity when their version was in the 1990 blockbuster film Ghost. This song music written by Alex North, and lyrics by Hy Zaret was used as a theme for the 1955 little-known prison film Unchained, hence the song title. The 1955 film centers around a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run, or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the soundtrack which was nominated for an Oscar in 1955, but the Best Song award went to the hit song Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing. Actually the 1936 untitled song was written and offered to Bing Crosby who turned it down and it remained unrecorded for almost twenty years. In 1955, North and lyricist Hy Zaret were contracted to write a song as a theme for the prison film Unchained, and their song eventually became known as the Unchained Melody. The song does not actually include the word unchained, and songwriter Zaret chose instead to focus his lyrics on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a long, lonely tim Song lyrics: Oh, my love, my darling Ive hungered for your touch A long, lonely time Time goes by so slowly And time can do so much Are you still mine? I need your love I need your love God speed your love to me Lonely rivers flow To the sea, to the sea To the open arms of the sea Lonely rivers sigh Wait for me, wait for me Ill be coming home, wait for me Oh, my love, my darling Ive hungered, for your touch A long, lonely time Time goes by so slowly And time can do so much Are you still mine? I need your love I need your love God speed your love to me Lonely mountains gaze At the stars, at the stars Waiting for the dawn of the day All alone I gaze At the stars, at the stars Dreaming of my love far away Oh, my love, my darling Ive hungered, for your touch A long, lonely time Time goes by so slowly And time can do so much Are you still mine? I need your love I need your love God speed your love to me https://youtube/watch?v=szpGVAGcysw
