From the archives A rare 1913 photo of Walter Klein was recently found in the Warsaw Historical Society’s archives. Walter C. Klein was the first soldier from Warsaw killed in action during World One. Warsaw’s Walter Klein Post 532 of the American Legion was formed and named in honor of Private Klein in the fall of 1919. Klein had been mortally wounded on August 29, 1918 in France during the Battle of Château Thierry. Historian, David Bassett of Warsaw, had asked for photos of Klein before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. The newly discovered photo is only one of two known to exist. It shows Klein as a 20-year old clerk in Dillon’s News Room in 1913. Dillon’s was located on North Main in downtown Warsaw. The other is of Private Klein in uniform before his death about six months later. David Bassett plans to publish a brochure memorializing Warsaws hero as part of his ongoing efforts to restore a World War One artillery piece. The gun sits in front of the Legion Hall in Warsaw’s Village Park.
