From the archives, for August 1: IT’S A FACT! According to the Iowa State Historical Society there are 24 “ghost” towns in Dallas County. At least that’s the number of post offices in the county that no longer exist. Most of those former post offices disappeared from Dallas County before the turn of the 20th Century. (A listing will be included in a History Series feature in the September 12 edition.) 115 YEARS AGO Some of the nimrods of Van Meter killed a crane last Monday. It weighed four pounds and was three feet in length. * * * Some of the young people who had their hands read by Prof. Ingram are feeling pretty blue over their future prospects * * * For some time past, sensations have been rather scarce in Perry, but on Wednesday afternoon an affair took place which bids fair to put all rival occurrences in the shade. A young lady of Perry, while walking past the post office, was made the object of some remark by a man immediately turned around and dealt the offender several hard and no doubt well deserved blows with her parasol. * * * Citizens living in the south part of town are complaining of a frequent disturbance of the peace by some women who quarrel and fight. Some arrests will follow if the shameful scene occurs again. 80 YEARS AGO “Tom the Peeper” has been reported seen at several places during the past week. At the Elmer Grove home, Mrs. Grove was awakened when a heavy set man flashed a light in her face and intruder has also been reported seen at the Short residence and the home of Dr. C.E. Mershon. Thus far no attempts of robbery have been made, and the actions of the man seeming more like that of a curious moron than a crook. Adel people are asked to report to the officers if a prowler is seen. 25 YEARS AGO Last week WETA TV from Washington, D.C., arrived in Dexter to have interviews and take pictures for a documentary. Questions were asked and answered regarding the Barrow Gang’s visit in the area and statistics were given about the plowing match of 1948. Herb Plambeck, radio’s farm reporter, was in Dexter for the filming and visited with several who attended in 1948 when he was there also. On Live at Five TV last week, Marvelle Feller was shown telling of his fear when Bonnie and Clyde came to their home demanding a car. He was 19 at the time. * * * Despite three days and nights of 90 degree-plus weather, this year’s county fair was a success.
