From the article: Giesbrecht said the Elbow is so important because, although only one-13th the size of the Bow River, the Elbow River provides one in seven Albertans with drinking water, with 40 per cent of Calgarians getting their drinking water from the river. The short and steep flow of the river system is also a factor in the need to practice good stewardship of the watershed, Giesbrecht said. She said because the river is short and steep any change in the river is quickly transmitted downstream, which results in the impact being felt quickly and without time to correct a problem. #abwater
