From the book; The opposing sides in the Syrian conflict were all about the enemy of one’s enemy being one’s friend. The United States had condemned the Eye Doctor as a brutal dictator. That was enough to win El Presidente friends the world over; North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, China, India, South Africa, Brazil, the Ayatollahs of Iran, the Lebanese terrorist organization Hizbollah, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (still nursing an epic butt-hurt from NATO’s military intervention in Libya, a favored client state) all lined up behind the regime, united in one common cause; to stick it to Uncle Sam in any way possible And one would think from the sheer vehemence with which these “anti-imperialists” backed the Eye Doctor, that the United States had made his downfall its top foreign policy priority, and had committed its entire military might to his destruction. Heck, the way the “antiimperialist” camp went on and on, I half expected to look out my hotel window one day and see the Sixth Fleet charging full steam ahead into Tartous.
