From the club on two contract extensions announced today. Collingwood champion Dane Swan has laid to rest the popular myth of his desire for an early retirement by signing a two-year contract extension. Swan, 29, is now contracted to the Magpies until the end of the 2016 season. One of the most influential and decorated players of his time, the 2011 Brownlow medallist vowed last year to play out his career in black and white and now seems certain to do so. “I wasn’t interested in going anywhere,” Swan said. ”In a way, I’ve grown up at Collingwood. I’ve been here for 13 years and loved it all the way. I figured the least I could do is get things sorted out early, remove any potential complications or distractions, and focus on a big year.” The announcement of Swan’s new deal was made this afternoon at Collingwood’s family day, as was that of Heritier Lumumba who has extended his contract out until the end of 2015. Lumumba, like Swan a premiership player and All-Australian in 2010, is in his 10th season at the Westpac Centre. He won the Jack Regan Trophy last year for a fifth place finish in the Copeland Trophy count. The 27 year-old reinvented himself as a wingman in 2013 after spending much of his career as a member of the Collingwood back six. Collingwood general manager of list management Derek Hine said the negotiations over the new deal had been straightforward. “Dane and his management consistently said that their intention was for Dane to continue his career at Collingwood. Dane wanted to stay and we wanted him to stay. We were both very transparent and our negotiations were seamless,” Hine said. Dane undoubtedly sits comfortably in the upper echelon of the elite players of the competition and we are confident that he will continue to play to the level that all AFL fans are accustomed for the term of his new agreement. We are delighted that he will continue to build on his playing CV at Collingwood, where he sits among the all-time great players.”
