From the department of Notation: While here in Detroit, I wrote out two string quartet arrangements in NOTION Music, after 15 years working in Sibelius. First impressions? Really quick, mostly wonderful. A few ugly slurs. It feels somewhat like Sibelius version 4 -- good, but also a fair amount of shortcomings you wouldnt realize until upgrading to Sibelius 5 (or presently, 7.5). Notion is to Sibelius as a 3-speed cruiser is to a Batmobile, with one HUGE caveat - Notion has a companion iPad app, which makes on-the-fly editing easier, and lightens my weekend backpack by about 5-6 pounds. If youre looking for a portable notation program for relatively simple music, Notion will work great -- and its on sale until the end of June for $50. (Read the perceptive Sound on Sound review below.) Still, I worry about plunging into it full-on -- Id hesitate to use it on an orchestral project, for instance. I wonder how long Notion will keep developing their product seriously, before kicking the can Sibelius-style. Im also curious as to what Daniel Spreadbury will cook up with his team at Steinberg, even if thats still far off.
