From the diary of an old villager to town: Cousin Hegame in Nora Vagi Brashs play, Which Way, Big Man, has this habit of being the first villager to town despite advice from relatives and wise elders that towns and cities are no places for stray villagers. He arrives unannounced at a nearest relatives house and explains how exhausted, hungry and thirsty he is. Yet he is the first to offer a prospective host some betel nuts and words of wisdom from the villages. His relative Gou Haia doesnt mind his presence. But his nakimi (tambu or in-law) Mrs. Gou Haia demands that he removes his Motuan habit of dependency from the house pronto. But he finds hospitality in people like Peta (the old, colonial haus boi) and a crowd of academics and radical students from the Waigani campus of UPNG. Lets all join together in wishing cousin Hegame, the original villager to town, a very Happy Independence Day!
