From the district website (barbertonschools.org) A New and Improved Barberton High School Patti Cleary Improvements to Barberton school buildings are still ongoing. BHS is the last phase of the district’s construction project. We have been able to enhance the high school even more because the district came in under budget after building or renovating the middle school and both elementary buildings, and because we were able to earn over $1.1 million in interest on the funds from the project. The Ohio Schools Facility Commission agreed to continue to co-fund improvements to our fifteen year-old high school as part of our District Master Plan, so we are still paying just forty cents on the dollar for these facility improvements. The library/media center has gone from the 20th century to the 21st century! The new configuration features more technology, more open seating and working areas and a student café. Students and teachers will get opportunities to try out new technology and software while enjoying a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Of course there will still be books in the library, but old editions that have not been checked out in years are being replaced by new resources. Additionally, here will be a quiet area for students to take their University of Akron post-secondary exams. You will also see improvements to our safety and security at the high school. The four entry doors have been redesigned to have “man-trap” entrances, similar to the other three buildings. Persons entering the building during the school day will have to pass through a higher threshold of security than in the past. We have also upgraded our security cameras to the high school, inside and outside of the building. Not only does BHS have more cameras (from 43 to 125), but they are high-resolution and can be viewed via Internet by our administrators remotely and monitored by our city safety services. Finally, you will see a new LED sign at the corner of Norton and Barber Roads. Our other buildings have new sign technology that is bright and easy to read. When BHS was opened in 2000, this technology did not exist. The new sign will be readable at different angles and in bright sunlight. These improvements have been financed by funds that must be used for capital improvement; this money cannot be moved to the general fund to pay salaries or buy supplies. For this reason, the district is also taking advantage of the State of Ohio’s ability to pay 60% of the cost.
