From the editor: Lets ask a very serious question about blues and health. In short: Id like to hear some suggestions about plans for musicians retirements. We all know many blues musicians play til the day they die -- but what happens if they cant play because of health, and thus cant make money to live? Lets have a real discussion on what can be done not only for future musicians, but for those having problems now. I was asked to comment on Eddie C. Campbell Officials heart attack for a newspaper article. They asked, It seems that many American blues legends live the winter of their lives struggling financially. Poor health hampers artists ability to make a living. I agreed, and lamented that many blues musicians do end up struggling financially later in life, and it’s a terrible and unfair burden to people that spent a lifetime bringing happiness and joy to the world. Theres great funds like The Blues Foundations HART Fund, but money is, of course, finite, and has to be distributed among a lot of people. So what can musicians do and what can fans do to not only plan for that, but work with musicians in need. Are there plans out there? Other non-profits? Govt assistance? Are there good ideas?
