From the letters of St. Pompilius Be a saint, a real son of CALASANZ, and a man of simple, humble and modest customs; be not anxious, for you have the tendency to loose peace easily. Be not worried about the things of this passing world: God, only God. My God and my all! Love God, yes, love him with all your heart and be not worried about anything else, my child. Try to be always a good religious having no other wish except God’s will upon you. God, God, God and nothing else. Be modest and reject curiosity; do not ponder about roman grandeur: to be to have been, to ought to be… these are three garlands without flower. On the contrary, meditate on eternity; think in terms of eternal years and thus I will love you in the Lord and we shall meet in the Lord and we shall see each other in the world, whenever God wills, as we only depend upon him. We, religious, meditate very little on eternity; we must recognize it with shame; frequently religious do to seek God; on the contrary each one seeks his own advantage and works for his own profit; it is not the honour of God and of the Congregation what religious seek, but their own facilities: this is the origin of relaxation in religious homes. You must say with the Apostle Paul and as an enthusiastic disciple of Joseph CALASANZ: Whatever was at first a gain, now I consider a loss compared with Christ. All is emptiness without God, and my only aim is to gain God and serve him in fidelity, detached from everything, even from my self. How many simple brothers in so many Congregations have attained holiness! You know several ones, and you are also to become a saint; think about it. Be a good brother, humble, charitable, modest, docile, gentle, lover of poverty, sparing with the things of the house, because poverty is a great vow. Never despise prayer in which you shall always find light to order your life in each circumstance. But if at any moment you experience darkness or aridity, then give to prayer more time in persevering struggle, until God will illumine your mind with his light. Keep watch on the tricks of the Evil one; with all his tactics he wants us to go away from prayer, without which the spiritual building collapses and all the virtues wither as a weary and dry plant, unless you water it in the opportune time. Be enthusiastic in becoming holy, but according to the ways of Jesus. Not by other ways. Your medicine let it be Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament: he will always keep you healthy, body and soul. Never be down trodden; let your only aim be to please God. Invoke frequently the name of the Virgin Mary and pray to her in simplicity. Beloved Lady, come to my rescue and never abandon me, but help me to be pleasing my Lord Jesus. While you control your passions and seek the mortification of your will, bringing into harmony your distorted self, keep your spirit cheerful, for you are working for eternity.
