From the more famous Agate Creek, QLD, this locality has produced some of the finest specimens in the world. This specimen exhibits a geopetal structure which is essentially a formation that indicates the right way up of the specimen as it was being created. Those flat lying bands of white and orange show where silica rich fluids pooled and solidified at the base of the gas pocket within the lava flow. Ive always been very curious as to why these form as to the normal characteristic concentric banding. My guess is it was due to rapid infiltration by silica rich hydrothermal fluids (either due to increased hydrothermal activity or increased porosity due to fractures) that exceeded the surface tension capabilities of the fluid and essentially pooled at the base of the pocket, rather than finely coating the outer shell. Just a thought! Nodules are approx 15cm across.
