From the perspective of campaign politics or campaign communication, the statement by Buhari that as president he will abolish the Office of the First Lady is a serious mistake. Trust me, I have read the whole interview and understand the context in which he says it. But anyone who understands how the media works would know that headlines do not capture contexts, and the statement can be misconstrued in any number of ways. Yes, the office is not constitutional. This is why it is not paid. But it is not illegal either. It is like a charity or a voluntary instrument that is capable of doing enormous amount of good for Nigeria and the world. Moreover, Buhari could not have been what he is today without Mrs Aisha Buharis contributions over a life time. Certainly. And in that sense, her First Ladyship would be an important model for millions of Nigerian families too. The fact that some previous First Ladies may have abused the office is not sufficient reason to abolish it. The best thing would be to reform the office and bring back the values of modesty, care and love that the it represents. So let the woman have her chance and let Nigerians benefit from what little she can do.
