From the professor files: The first extra-credit question on my first Introduction to Meteorology exam is the same every year, What is your professors first name (spelling counts)? Depending on who you asked out of my 26 students today in my afternoon section, my name was one of the following: Vittorio Victor Victorio Vittario Vittori Vicctorio Tom Dave Vittorino Vittoro 7 students left the question blank. Weve been in session for 3.5 weeks and you still dont know WHO is teaching the class!? I spent 25 min. at the begging of the semester introducing myself and talking about my journey to where I am today. Hell, at that point, I had students in the class that did not even bother to read the course description (remember the meteor comment?) Furthermore, you pretty much have to walk by my office to get to the classroom everyday, where my name tag is blatantly displayed. Most of all, this makes me sad. Take it from someone who is working the front lines. Students coming out of high-school are NOT prepared for college. They do not understand basic time management skills nor comprehend what it means to actually study for a science course. Sadly, this appears not to just be rooted @ the community college level. I hear similar stories from colleagues around the country. What can we do to fix the problem? Is it related to electronic devices? I find a lot of my students are distracted as hell due to a little electronic device constantly feeding them mind poison. As one of my friends stated, we are well on our way to an idocracy. I cannot help but agree with her.
