From the status of a friend named Gina, this morning. A brilliant thinker, an awesome nurse, and friend to everyone she meets. Ive never heard it put quite like she has today... I was getting to know a political candidate for a non-partisan race the other day, and he mentioned that his wife was also very politically active. I asked what her name is, and he said, Sarah. I asked, Same last name? He just stared at me for three seconds, studying my face, then smilingly said, Yes. Shes my wife. I almost spit my beverage out. I chuckled and said, Well, not everyone does things your way or my way, of course. Then, I kid you not, he said, Well, they should. Many of you know the story about the man who pulled up to place an order at McDonalds and called the kid in the drive-through window a blankety-blank faggot for having long hair dyed black. I crept up next to him in my car and asked him if he just called that kid back there those awful names. He said, Yeah, did you get a look at that guy? I replied, Does everyone need to look like you? He answered, Well, they should. Then there was the time during the holidays (when I typically ask people whether they celebrate Christmas before assuming that they do), and one woman said, Of course I celebrate Christmas. Who doesnt celebrate Christmas? I smiled warmly and lightened it up, joking, I bet Santa is glad that two-thirds of the world does NOT celebrate Christmas. That would be a nightmare of an operation! She said, What?! Two-thirds of the world does not celebrate Christmas? Well, they should. People all have such very, very different backgrounds. We have so many different colors of skin and eyes and hair, we have different beliefs and ideas and traditions largely because our ancestors each walked in different directions across the globe during times of human migration. We all have different ways of doing things and expressing ourselves, especially in a melting pot like the United States. As my Reagan says, we are an everything nation. Are we not being arrogant when we think that someone should be just like us? Isnt it just a little bit presumptuous to assume that everyone believes or should believe what we believe? Should we really be should-ing all over the place?
