From the strange but true file today, I was approached by a gentlemen in a busy shopping area of Jaipur who I would say was in his 50s and he mentioned that he can speak english but he cannot write it very well, and he asked me if I would take dictation for a letter. I have to say the first thing on my mind was this was some kind of scam where I would get distracted then robbed of my stuff. He handed me a thin piece of yellow notepaper and asked me to sit in his shop which had a few guys in it, date the letter and the city name and he started. My Dear Dear Elise, I miss you so so much, you are all I think about.... You know what it sad? Is that even as I got to the second page of the letter I was still trying to figure out if I was in any danger and was like ok lets wrap this up.... After I finished he explained that he will copy the letter onto nice paper and send it to her and that he didnt ask anyone he knows to do it because (if /when she comes back) he doesnt want them saying Hey I wrote a letter to you! - as I was a tourist who was leaving there would be little chance of that happening. Looking back on it I should have more graceful about it, I am just chalking my attitude up to the effect of constant bombardment with the same chit chat conversations where somebody only knows canned responses then giggles to their friends when you answer or people trying to sell you something or scam you. Actually really makes me thankful once again to have had the opportunities I have had in my life- starting with a quality education. I hope he gets his girl..........
