From the vaults: I just found (apparently because it was just posted on youtube today) what seems to be the official premier of Die Liebe der Danae by (you guessed it) Richard Strauss. An old gem. Simply beautiful. At first I was a bit skeptical in believing it was the genuine Krauss/WienerPhil recording, Id have thought such a musical relic was probably either lost or never recorded in the first place. But that cheeky little pause at 10:53 is undoubtedly Krauss doing, as it is not in the original score. Funny story, as per Norman del Mar, Midas aria was suggested by Krauss to Strauss (to the dismay of Gregor) after he realised that up to that point the tenor lacked any significant solos, and the plot lacked much in regards to the character. The monologue was entirely written by him (take it as his trial before going on to write Capriccio). He was so proud of his confection, that he very slyly added a double bar after the solo so that the audience would clap. They clearly did. I can only imagine Krauss smiling to himself in the pit at that point. In any case, the opera, or at least the third act of it, is well worth a good listen and score reading. It contains some Strauss as I had never heard! You will hear me go on and on about it. Just saying. Enjoy your music-making! https://youtube/watch?v=2bwre1vAWe0
