From this look-out in the eastern Samarian hills, one can see the Jordan Valley down below which runs north-south forming Israels eastern border with Jordan. In the distance, the high-rising mountains on the Jordanian side of the border can be seen. Before the June 1967 6-Day War, all of this area was under Jordanian control, and this is the origin of the term West Bank. From the Jordanian perspective between 1948-1967, the area is on the West Bank of the Jordan River, as opposed to the rest of Jordan on the East Bank. Realizing the strategic importance of the Jordan Valley and Israels eastern border, even most left-wing Israelis refuse to compromise on it. Shortly after the 6-Day War, left-wing administrations including Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir & Yitzhak Rabin all supported establishing Jewish settlements in the Jordan Valley. Recently, American Secretary of State John Kerry suggested placing sensors in the Jordan Valley as part of a peace agreement between Israel & the Palestinians, to which Israeli Defense Minister Bugi Ayalon responded behind closed doors that Kerry is dilusional.
