From time to time some people get in touch either via message or e-mail. Gus OReilly, a regular viewer of our page is one of those. Brought up in the area, Gus didnt move too far away and some time back sent us some reminisces of his teenage years. In one of his messages he reminded us of the weekend nights at the Hop in the old pavilion at the Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club, known to all then as the Nevin. We mentioned the Nevin, and the dances in Charleville before but we reckon its best to read Guss words on the subject..... - “Anybody got any memories of the Nevin Tennis club. Great place to hang out on Sunday nights all those years ago listening to the Strangers, and where a lot of us met our future partners. Up to Cowzers chipper afterwards for fish & chips. They really were the good old days. The battle of the Beatles and the Stones was played out every Sunday. Then off to school in St Vincents on Monday morning for another week. Ah the memories, and the girls. Where have all the good times gone..... and to think the only security required was Jim on the door, he put manners on us all... (this was) from 65 to 67. - Gus” - Other great bands of the day played the Nevin and these included The Vampires, Strangers, Bye Laws, Creatures, Deep Set, Mitch and The Editions, Firebrigade, Movement, Others, etc. It was even graced by the presence of Thin Lizzy c.1970. Gus only recently revealed to us that he too was a bit of a troubadour, and had his own band - The In-Sect. It turns out that they also played the Nevin and all the other clubs around Dublin. Regrettably, we cant remember the band (senior moments on our part) but they must have been pretty good. Gus tells us they won a Battle of the Bands competition in Dublins Mansion House c.1966, an event he seems to recall as being organised by the Eamon Andrews Studios in co-operation with Jacobs (Biscuits). The band was headed by Gus and a few other local lads, namely; Joe Holmes on drums - another of our page viewers, the late Mark Bolger, RIP, Tommy Lynch, and Dave McCullough on bass. They stayed together for about three years before each went their separate ways. Might there be a reunion tour in the air? (Dave and Tommy, if youre looking in drop us an e-mail and well put you in touch) Gus sent us these photographs from yesteryear.....
