From very beginning, I have always enjoyed comperes..who conduct the programs. ..and was impressed by their skills as a listener. I respect their performance and their contribution towards the success of the show. In fact, in those days, we were familiar with the word " Announcer "..I came to know the difference between an announcer and a compere, as I joined AIR. Some of the well known poets have performed as comperes in Gujarati Light Music programs.Some very good voices did came on the stage for it. Some artists themselves did the job ! But, gradually, the importance of the comperes was established. We have Suren Thakar " Mehul " and Shibhit Desai..both are good poets and have their own style. " Mehul " is a professor and have in depth study of Folk Lit. along with Gujarati Lit. Shobhit Desai is a renown " Shayar " with his trademark style of use of language and presentation. Both helped the field a lot. They could establish a link between the listeners and the performers. Content of the two were different from each other. But, listeners got so many added information, . They were not there to provide the central thought of the song going to be sung..they were creating an atmosphere for it with the help of relevant Sher or lines of the same or the other poets. It was enriching experience for the listeners...along with being an entertainment. Their presence was so much in demand that people insisted for them and were not disappointed ! Compering helped the performers also by giving them breathing time and giving their full to the performance. Entry of the comperes was a boon to lit. and music , both. [ will cont. in future ..]
