From what I can see, Charmaz suggests coding everything as gerunds - TopicsExpress

From what I can see, Charmaz suggests coding everything as gerunds in the first instance and focusing on a process rather than a concept. The Glaser books that Ive read so far dont seem to suggest that every open code should be a gerund, although the core category may end up being one. Glasers lessons on theoretical coding suggest that a grounded theory may end up being presented as a process if this is warranted by the data, but that the categories may end up being integrated in a different way if a different theoretical code fits better (even though all GTs end up describing some sort of basic social process). Am I understanding this correctly, and if so, does this mean that a classic GT researcher would not necessarily open code everything with gerunds or look for a process? Im wondering if Glaser would think of Charmaz instructions as forcing the data through pet codes/frameworks? Do you agree, and if so, what do you think Charmaz would say in response?
