From what I read, what was particularly tragic was how the people put their full trust in and followed the Emperor no matter how maniacal he became. Even after the horrific outcome of Hiroshima and even after the second atomic bomb destroyed Nagasaki, the Emperor was still telling people that things were not as bad as people were led to believe. The important take-away for the Japanese as well as all people was not to blindly put all of their trust in one leader.
