From what Ive seen over the course of my lifetime, very few believers have actually read the Bible, other than a handful of scriptures theyve been pointed to, usually by those who are passing a collection plate or providing an address to send money to. Instead, they worship the book itself as an object, and have no real clue what it actually says from cover to cover. This is simply because of tradition passed down from their parents or other authority figures, usually; It was imparted to them that the book is somehow sacred, and must be treated as such. Burn one in front of them, and they go crazy because they worship it as a religious object. But if they actually read it from cover to cover, theyd want to burn it themselves if they have an ounce of humanity in them, after discovering for themselves the incredibly vile content, views, advice and commands it demands of those who claim to believe in what it says. Fred Phelps was a vile human being, but he was a vile human being because he really did follow the whole book, not just the feel-good parts of it that preachers focus on just before asking for money. Its been said many times that the easiest way to become an atheist is to actually read the Bible all the way through. I did it three times, and it sealed the matter for me. As a rationally thinking and feeling human being with empathy and sympathy and a forgiving nature, I simply could not in good conscience believe such ridiculous myths, nor endorse such inhuman atrocities as it calls upon its believers to both sanction and commit themselves to. The barbaric and atrocious practices of the bronze age have no place in a modern civilized world, and the sooner we as a species rid ourselves of them, the sooner we can actually achieve that modern civilized world world we would all like to live in. So, read your Bibles; Every word of them, from cover to cover. Then burn them in the name of Fred Phelps disgusting legacy derived from a thorough reading of it.
