From where In the thirty years I lived in Georgia that question came up… I’d say “philcampbell” and wait for the blank look then slowly say, “P h i l Campbell, A l a b a m a”… Yes, it is a town, not a person… well, named after a person’s full name… Alabama was my point of origin my birthplace, Russellville, my home place, PC… My family (Father & Mother) grew up in the Liberty Hill, Alabama, area & their sisters & brothers went to all kinds of places… Mother was the baby of 11…. 12 children… Father was the baby of 5 with additional step-brothers & step-sisters & half relatives… Thus, eventually, there were lots… lots & lots of relatives, cousins, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins… Father’s Mother died when he was only 3… & twin brothers passed away also… Mother had a nephew that was just a year younger then she was… he became a surgeon… After Mother passed away he wrote a lovely letter to my sister & me about how he was used as model for Mother’s clothes… I had four cousins the same age as I was throughout my school years… at PCHS… Let’s just say none of us did anything that the other’s didn’t know about… and tell… My sister’s dating era was always preceded with the question “Mom, are we related to (insert boy’s name here)?”… Since I wasn’t as popular as sister was, I didn’t have that problem… My adventures were always group related… High school years were filled with band adventures, practice of the clarinet & majorette twirling… Relatives were sure to see sister & me during the candy sales & without fail, purchased something… salesperson, I was not… Standing on the corner as traffic moved through three red lights in town… we’d sell to most cars… nice folks… Members of the Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church for my youthful time… then First Baptist Church PC… As a teenager I went to the Methodist Youth meetings then walked across the street to the First Baptist Church for services… PCHS & that Methodist church were hit by the deadliest, longest EF5 tornado that killed 28 folks in the area & leveled half the town on April 27, 2011… My hometown architecture was forever changed that day, with the new school now under construction & the Methodist church torn down… July 2013 by ann t evans
