From your reading around the subject, starting with the books suggested in the sources of information above, apply the theoretical approach used to study the economics of the construction industry to analyse the construction industry of the country. The essay in part 2 of the coursework must include industry data and analysis. Graphs and tables must be shown as part of the text and must be referred to and explained. They must not be inserted at the end or as appendices. There must be a quantitative element in your essay. This will provide evidence to support the argument that your selected topic is related to construction activity in some way. You may include tables, graphs and statistical analyses. The essay must deal with an economic aspect of construction and therefore it needs to refer to a least one economic theory applied to the construction industry. It is therefore essential that students read at least one construction economics textbook As in life when faced with a task, it is usual to seek help from others. This is encouraged in this exercise. In order to produce the highest standard students should feel able to discuss their coursework with fellow students and give advice on other class-members’ work. Students remain responsible for their own submissions and essays must be their own work. Students are therefore urged to use Blackboard to communicate with other members of the class by posting questions and helpful suggestions on the site. Debates and answers to questions are welcome and a lively, useful class discussion board should become a virtual ongoing place for the members of the class to learn from each other. One of the aims of this exercise is to share knowledge and skills and enable students to be of mutual benefit to each other. The outcome should then be a much higher quality of coursework by all members of the class than would be the case, if students worked in isolation. You will need to refer to official published data, refereed journals and books. Websites can be used stating date when accessed but websites should not dominate the references, even where the data or reference has been found on the internet. Use Library Search to locate papers of relevance. The length of the coursework (excluding appendices) should be no more than 2,000 words as the coursework is expected to include data analysis, graphs and an appendix explaining the method used to analyse the data. The hand-in deadline is Monday 19th March 2012. You need to hand in a hard copy of your tables (Part 1) and essay (Part 2) by 6pm on the day at the latest. You are also required to hand in your coursework on line. The marks for Part 1 are out of 20 and for Part 2 out of 80
