But thanks to speakers at virtually every Bioneers Conference, we can see that there is indeed diversity in the ranks, and that much more is necessary. We might assume that people of color and the poor are preoccupied with more basic issues of survival, but this is a serious over-simplification. We will begin this exploration of diversity by presenting Phaedra Ellis-Lamkin’s memorable plenary speech from this year’s Bioneers Conference. As CEO of Green for All, which is one of the country’s leading advocacy groups for a clean energy economy, Phaedra has been instrumental in helping to redefine the face of environmentalism at the federal, state, and local levels through youth engagement and partnerships with popular artists. She will tell her story of a long journey that started well outside of the environmental movement and that lead to exceptional achievement in that same movement today. At the request of the CU Environmental Center, Ian Sanderson will be reviewing the recent CU satellite conference with us, and he is uniquely qualified to lead our discussion following Phaedra’s plenary speech.
