Frustrated & annoyed with myself for not knowing how to budget our time any better than we already do. Ok, so heres my issue. My son is 6 (soon to be 7). Hes in 1st grade. He comes home with homework nightly that sometimes takes us up to an hour (tonight it was 40 mins, plus 10 mins to do his list of reading words). He also has to have 20 minutes of reading time nightly. I received an email from his teacher that they are asking us to download and log onto a math site called XtraMath, and are encouraging parents/children to do 1 or 2 sessions of Xtra math homework nightly. (that adds 10-20 mins extra homework nightly) Lets top that off with an additional email sent to the parents of my sons classroom letting us all know that starting next week there will also be spelling worksheets sent home 2-3 nights a week to help prep our children for their weekly spelling tests. HES SIX YEARS OLD! I understand how important education is, but does a first grader really need to be worrying about nearly 2 hours homework nightly? Im a single parent, so selfishly speaking, all those extra hours of homework are on top of a full workday, he cant be expected to do all of that on his own, he needs a parent to help him thru it. Danny and I leave the house most mornings between 6:30-7am & get home around 4-4:15 p daily, that leaves us with exactly 3.5 hours together before his bedtime at 7:30. If I factor in dinner(cook, eat,cleanup), bathtime and homework what time does that leave for us to just be a family? or go outside and throw a ball? or play a board game? End of rant.
