Frustrating, free to go, no crime reported and now no crime stat. Two people yesterday (Friday) was caught red-handed at Eden on the Bay stealing someones handbag. Typical fashion, the lady sits behind a group of people and then sneakily grabs the bag and passes to her accomplice. Unfortunately for the couple a Neighbourhood Watch member had full visual of the incident. They then confronted the couple and the male accomplice made a run for it but was captured. Law Enforcement took the couple to Big Bay station and then called SAPS. The victim went to the station to file a report but explained that she was on holiday and flying back to her native country in a couple of hours. SAPS then turned around and said because the victim wont be in the country for the court date a warrant for their arrest would be issued as they wouldnt be able to appear in court so strongly advised them not to press charges. SAPS took the couple away for fingerprinting to see if there had any outstanding warrants but the reality is they would be set free, no crime reported and now no crime stat. Moral of the story - Always keep your belongings on you and secondly the justice system is badly letting the county down. So the next time someone starts quoting crime stats ask them about the crime that goes unreported. This was not an alleged theft but one witnessed :(
