Full Report on u-21 Championship victory over Cortoon courtesy of Danny Corbett: A six point haul from full forward James Welsh helped us on our way to a comprehensive fourteen point win over Cortoon Shamrocks in this North Board U-21 championship quarter final played in Headford on Friday evening. The 3-16 to 3-2 score line doesn’t actually do justice to Headford’s dominance in this game. An early Steve Monaghan goal was quickly cancelled out by two goals from the visitors. However this only served to kick start Headford as James sent over a hat trick of points to add to an Aaron McDonagh point to leave us a point ahead. During this spell Padraic Cunningham sent a penalty inches wide after Darren Moran was fouled in the large square. Cortoon Shamrocks’ main man Joe Donnellan drew his side level before Headford once again hit a succession of unanswered scores. Simon Varley, James Welch and Aaron McDonagh kicked a point apiece before the hard working Padraic Cunningham got the goal his efforts deserved. This left us in a seemingly strong position approaching half time but once again our defence failed to clear their lines and Donnellan fired home his second goal to leave just three points between the teams at half time, 2-7 to 3-1. Any fears the Headford supporters had were eased after the break as an early scoring blitz put the result beyond doubt. Simon Varley (2), Aaron McDonagh and Padraic Cunningham registered points to add to Steve Monaghan’s second goal of the game. This left us ahead 3-11 to 3-2 with Cortoon Shamrocks only second half score coming from their right corner forward. At this stage it was a matter of counting down the clock but we still managed to add five more points to our tally. These scores came from James Welch (2), Padraic Cunningham, Thomas Conneally and James O Brien. James O Brien’s point was arguably the score of the game as last year’s Galway North Tedd Webb centre back went on a solo run from his wing back position, rounded a number of defenders, and fired over the last score of the game. This win was all the more impressive as Headford started without top scorer Alan Meeneghan through injury, while county minor from last year, Dylan Corbett, went off injured after fifteen minutes. Mikey Day dominated the midfield area with county U-21 colleague, Cathal Mulryan, unable to exert any real influence on the game for the visitors. Joe Donnellan’s physicality caused huge problems for us in the first half but swapping Fergal Carey on to him in the second half helped curb his influence to a large degree. Team- Richard Joyce, Darren Hannon, Daniel Garvey, Fergal Carey, Kristopher Cunningham, Darren Moran, James O Brien (0-1), Dylan Corbett, Mikey Day, Steve Monaghan (2-0), Niall Cunningham, Thomas Conneally (0-1), Simon Varley (0-3), James Walsh (0-6), Padraic Cunningham (1-2). Subs used- Aaron McDonagh (0-3) for Dylan Corbett (inj), Mark Gibbons for Simon Varley.
