(Full text of the press release by Rivers State Government). I dont need a prophet to tell me that the NJC and the Nigerian judiciary are in the eye of a terrible storm. Matter arising: 1. Conflict of statutory responsibilities between the NJC and the JSC of Rivers State. 2. Hon. Justice Akanbi of the Federal High Court had ruled in favour of Rivers State JSC with respect to the conflict in issue. 3. 3. The CJN is the Chairperson of the NJC which was a party to the said suit. 4. Can the NJC still exercise its administrative powers over the Chief Judge of Rivers State given the facts and circumstances of this case, especially in the face of a valid and subsisting decision of a superior court of record? 5. This crisis is a pointer to some latent defects in the constitution. 6. No nation can boast of social cohesion without a strong and independent Judiciary whose operation is well rooted in public confidence. Concrete erosion of public confidence in the Judiciary is the best spelling of DOOM! 7. The on-going drama in Rivers State is a raw material for the emergence of a new and indomitable justice system in Nigeria. Im following the trend of unfolding events with suppressed anxiety!
