Baby-led weaning is a method of introducing solid foods to babies whereby instead of the traditional approach of spoon-feeding purees, the infant is allowed to self-feed family foods from the start of weaning. Despite Google returning over 2 million hits on the topic area and proponents of the method suggesting that the approach promotes positive eating behaviour and weight gain trajectories in children, there has been little empirical examination of the method. Given the increasing number of parents following the approach, and asking their health professionals for advice, research needs to build an evidence base for guidance to be developed on the method.
