Fumihito, Prince Akishino, younger son of Emperor Akihito of Japan, married Kiko Kawashima, daughter of a university professor, on 29 July 1990. Twelve years after the birth of their younger daughter, Princess Akishino gave birth to a son, Prince Hisahito, who follows his father and his uncle the Crown Prince in the line of succession, temporarily averting the succession crisis caused by a lack of male heirs (females being ineligible to succeed to the Chrysanthemum Throne).
