Fun Fact Friday! *In honor of Mothers Day 12 fun facts* Did you know? 1. The mouse mom (Doe) has a litter of 6-10 “pinkies” that are about the size of a nickel when born. 2. The gestation period of a dog averages 63 days. Dog moms (Dams) can have anywhere from 1-17 pups in a litter depending on the size, age and breed of dog. 3. Due to the way humans have bred them, dogs that have small hips, like the English bulldog and the Boston terrier usually have to have their babies by Cesarean section. 4. A mother rabbit (Doe) gives birth to between four and twelve kits 5. A mother cat is called a Queen. She and her offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years. 6. A Guinea Pig mother (Sow) has between one and six pups at one time. She will nurse them for 3-5 weeks. 7. Female tarantulas eat their suitors to nourish their young. 8. A mother tortoise will lay between one and sixty eggs at a time. She then leaves her nest behind and the hatchlings are on their own. 9. All 9,000 species of birds lay eggs. Many times the male works tirelessly preparing a nest to impress a female who catches his eye. 10. Depending on the breed of snake, she may either lay eggs or give birth to live young. The Bull snake is very large and one of her eggs is the size of a chicken’s. A dangerous copperhead snake has between three and nine live babies at one time. 11. Pot-bellied pig mothers (Sows) give birth to between five and eight piglets. They are born with their eyes open and are up and moving around immediately after being born. 12. Most frog moms lay eggs but some have live tadpoles. These little guys grow to be fully-formed frogs in about 12 weeks. If you have a mom, give her an extra hug today.
