Fun Facts Friday: This is the Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly, feeding on common milkweed in front of the research station this summer. Its a fairly common butterfly in the northeast, and a large one at 2.5-4 inches in wingspan. They prefer open moist areas such as fields and meadows, but can also be found on the edges of forests. Theyre in the Nymphalidae family of true butterflies, sometimes called the brush footed butterflies in reference to their small first pair of legs.
