Fun(d) For Lucas On June 29, 2013 Kinnick South in Fort Madison, IA will host a fund raiser for Lucas Montgomery. Lucas is a beautiful young man who loves to play ball, snuggle, eat, and could use your help. Lucas’ dad is former Hawkeye football player Lew Montgomery (‘88-‘92). Lew was the 3rd best rusher in 1992 for the Hawkeyes, Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in 1991, he finished his career with over 1000 yards rushing, and 17 Touch Downs. Lucas’ mom is Fort Madison native Stacey Harris-Montgomery who graduated from Fort Madison High School in 1990. Stacey was a member of the volleyball team (2 yr), basketball team (3 yr) and received many accolades for her talent as a runner. Stacey ran at the Drake Relays and the State Track Meet all 4 years of high school. She was a member of the 4x100, 4x200, Sprint Medley Relay and Open 200 Meter Dash. Lucas was born July 31, 1997 and was diagnosed in January of 2006 with Sanfilippo B, MPS III. This is a life limiting disorder, and there is no cure. The Montgomery’s spent several years trying to find answers to why Lucas was losing his speech, having mobility and fine motor issues, not sleeping and always sick. Lucas lacks the enzyme necessary to break down heparin sulfate. This enzyme continues to build up in his body causing progressive damage. Without a cure he will be expected to lose the few vocabulary words that he manages to utter and become unresponsive. Most teens with this disorder do not live past their teen years. Lucas is wheelchair bound, unable to care for himself, has seizures, and swallowing difficulties. Stacey and Lew are in need of renovating their home for wheelchair accessibility to the shower/bath, a Hoyer lift, and wood floors for ease of wheelchair mobility. Stacey applied for a disability/grant money/funding and will end up being about $5000 short to complete all their projects to make Lucas’ mobility easier.
