Fun fact: Each state is permitted to have two statues on display in the U.S. Capitol – the full collection is known as the National Statuary Hall Collection. (You can see them all online aoc.gov/the-national-statuary-hall-collection). Michigan has statues of two very prominent Michiganders: Gerald R. Ford (statue located in the Capitol Rotunda) and Lewis Cass (statue located in Statuary Hall). Gerald R. Ford, 38th president of the United States, was the first person to assume the offices of vice president and president upon the resignation of his predecessors. This followed upon 25 years of service in Congress, including eight as House minority leader. Lewis Cass is best known as the former governor of the Territory of Michigan. Cass opened a law practice in Marietta, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio Legislature in 1806 and served as the United States marshal in Ohio from 1807 to 1812. He enthusiastically fought in the War of 1812 and was appointed a colonel in the Third Ohio Regiment. He became a brigadier general in the United States Army a year later.
