Fun fact: My last name (Breckenridge) is from old Norse Brækni-hryggr. The literal translation is from the fern mountains. It refers to areas of ancient Scotland and Ireland where my ancestors (mostly a great many noble families of the times) ruled. In early America, shortly after the Louisianna Purchase, a large swath of land from Minnesota down to Missouri alongside the Illinois Territory was called Breckenridge country. It didnt last more than 10-20 years, though many references can be found along the area, like counties named Breckenridge and local folklore.
