Fun fact: There was a point in global history where microbes that decompose matter did not exist, so when something died, it did not decompose. This is known as the Carboniferous period. All those billions of tons of carbon built up and eventually were covered up and compressed to become the oil we mine today. It should be known that not only is oil nonrenewable, the process that allowed oil to come into being is now impossible in nature unless all microbes died, in which case, we would all die as well.
