Fun fact as Xmas is fast approaching: The tradition of leaving out milk and cookies for Santa, stems from an older pagan practice of offering milk to the Heathen Goddess Holda. (She is thought to be the reason behind the Mother Goose figure in European fairy tales, as she is associated with geese and white feathers in general.) Holda is usually depicted in the crone aspect, and one of the legends that is linked to her is that she would steal children from their beds if they were naughty. To placate Holda (to keep the children safe), milk would be left out for her overnight on the winter solstice. (A chalice of water is sometimes replaced with milk in modern pagen practices for this reason). (Love the way old meets new and the traditions are still being met to this day :).) (Claire).
