Fun music fact for everyone: I would say the #1 mistake that music producers, including myself, make is too much sub bass. The reason why professional mainstream masterings are so loud is not only because of the expensive equipment theyre using, but the sub bass isnt TOO high and overpowering, so as to let all of the higher louder frequencies shine through. Some of the reasons why we boost the subs too high is because we cant always hear it that well, especially without good monitors or headphones, and we confuse it with people playing songs in public places where their systems are designed to boost the subs anyway. The best solution, I find, is to make sure the lowest frequency doesnt overtake the highest frequency in average volume, and compare it to the levels in a song that was released on a multi-million dollar budget. If youre not a music producer, consider this something Ive learned to boost the quality in my future productions of 2015 :D
