Fun recent finds from a SW Florida wet time machine. I was joined by paleo pal Steve Clawson, his adventurous Dad and their father/son friends John and Sam Rodewald. Steve had the finds of the day: a Hemiauchenia llama tooth and a large slab of mammoth/mastodon tibia that fell apart once it hit the open air. Look closely at the possible bite mark running at an angle on the bone. Cool beanies! Perhaps it was a smilo or jag or even a bear dog. Steve has already laid out the pieces and stabilized the find. Great job guys!! And of course, if anybody thinks fossil hunting is safer than alligator wrestling, remember that theres always something guarding the treasure. This is a giant fishing spider, known for diving underwater to nab minnows. Hes every bit as big as a wolf spider (4 inches from back to front legs) and can free dive about 6 inches. Now if they would only go after the gators... (Mark Renz and Steve Clawson photos, which youre welcome to share) Florida wilderness photos and books Ive written are here as part of my fossil expeditions guide service: fossilexpeditions/.
