Fun sharing TRIVIA about my ancestors... My grandma and grandpa. I never got to meet either of my grandfathers, they died at very young ages. This is a pic of my grandparents on my moms side - Illa Cecil Jordan and Aldophus William Addington of Virginia. Adolphus and Ila had nine children from 1914 to 1930. They are Adolphus William, Jr., Harold Cecil, Virginia Dare, Douglas Norman, Juanita Elizabeth, Mary Louise, Evelyn Mae (my mom), Jack Hoover and Charles Raymond. My grandfather died in 1931, leaving my grandmother to bring up 9 children, no small task during the Great Depression. However, she succeeded and all nine children attended and finished Coeburn High School. And most went on to college with the help of relatives. THE LETTER, written by my Uncle Jack Addington for The Appalachian Quarterly - 1997: It is refreshing, in these difficult time we live in, of loose conduct and lack of respect, to reflect back to times when things were not so bad; when good manners were the rule. THE LETTER - below - is what my father, Adolphus William Addington, wrote to Paris J. Jordan on September 3, 1912. It was a request for permission to marry Mr. Jordans daughter, Ila, my mother; ===== Coeburn, VA September 3, 1912 My Dear Sir, I am certain you will not be surprised when I tell you that through my frequent visits at your house and your kindness to me. I have learned to regard your daughter with the most sincere affection. Knowing that her welfare and happiness must be the first consideration with you, I hasten to acquaint you with my feelings and if an honest and sincere affection can secure her happiness, these certainly shall not be wanting. Will you trust her to me? I anxiously await your answer. Very Respectfully, Adophus W. Addington =========== Mr. Jordan gave permission and they were married 13 days later in Bristol, TN. They made their home in Coeburn, VA where this wedding picture was taken.
