Fun travel piece about exploring a great city with my favorite literary style in mind. I love noir - novels, films, Hammet, Chandler, Spade, Marlowe, Bogart the King. I wish I could think of good plays in the style - Id love to see them done. Noir seems to best encapsulate how I see the world, as much as Id love to believe in rainbow farting unicorns & such. I like this bit: As the light began to fade and shadows crept across the room, Mr. Muller said he believed that the appeal of noir can be summed up in his three-word description of the genre: “suffering with style.” Noir, he said, “presupposes the worst aspects of human nature,” yet its birth “coincided with the pinnacle of American style.” That juxtaposition all began with Hammett. Especially the suffering with style part. There you go.
