Funeral Consumer Tip #15: PRE PAID FUNERALS. Did you know that a pre paid funeral contract is often times transferable? That means just because you have a pre paid contract with one funeral home, you can use it at another funeral home. Often I get calls about problems, and my first question is about these type of contracts. So here are some tips: 1. Funeral Homes are not priced the same...SHOP!! 2. Just because mom or dad pre paid a contract does not always obligate you to use that particular funeral home. Often times you have an insurance policy that can be honored by other funeral homes. 3. If mom or dad paid $3,000 for a basic cremation in a pre paid plan, you can get a cremation performed through another provider for $650 today, your family would receive back $2350 from the policy. 4. If mom or dad buys one of these policies understand that prices may go down for services like Direct Cremation, so pre paying may not be the smart thing to do. 5. Ask questions and then call me. The pre paid funeral segment is a multi-billion dollar facet of this industry and as with any other large financial transaction you have to have your guard up, ask questions, and protect your pocketbook.
