Funny how things pop into your mind now and then. Someone mentions or writes something and a related thought pops in. On one of the nets the guys were talking about C-rations then someone mentioned burning his mustache while trying heat some C-rats and in pops that random memory of my first ever honest to goodness mustache. It as 1968 in Vietnam, I was a new guy in the unit. All the guys are growing mustaches. Guys with light brown hair, blond hair, all growing nice dark mustaches. So I think, Ill show them a stach. Didnt take long to grow one but it did not come out the way I expected. Of course as a child I had light colored hair, but nothing like this mustache from hell. So here I am, nice young guy from S. Texas with dark brown hair (ok a few red highlights) and a full mustache the color of what???? Dayglo Orange. I had grown the brightest, reddest, mustache in cavalry history. Hell, ole Patton would have been proud of it, (but we all know he was a weird asshole anyway). So I learned the trick of black mustache wax (also mascara) to hide my shame. Of course I wasnt the only one hiding behind colored articles, but I had grown it in plain view so everyone knew the truth of the color of the hair. Some of the guys actually suggested that I leave it at its original color claiming it was a safety issue. 1st. everyone in the flight could see me or at least the glow and be able to follow our lead in the fog. 2nd. the mustache would serve as and aiming point for NVA and Vietcong gunners but the radiance would blind them so that their effectiveness was neutralized. 3rd. unmentionable. (XXX rated), wait, that was my response so never mind 3rd. I later in life grew a full beard, and you guessed it, most of it was red. Not enough mascara or time to apply it to cover a full beard, so multi colored it was. Of course everything that was red has since turned grey/white or fallen out. And no, I dont have a bald spot, just a solar panel fro a love machine. yall have a good night and I hope you enjoyed my story
