Furiends, I have said it before and will continue to say it, animal rescue is filled with extreme highs and extreme lows. I dont know how hoomans in rescue stay sane! Todays high: when a representative from the Rural Shelter Cat Transport team went to the shelter to pull the cats featured yesterday, Sara Hartman asked her to pull several more cats, including another mom and litter of kittens. Our storming the gates of the shelter worked, furiends!!! Whether Sara is truly transformed or just responding to the immense pressure of social media, does not matter! We must press on so that the treatment of these homeless animals may continue to improve! This would not have happened without you, furiends!! Now for the low. The two remaining kittens from the litter that sparked this journey crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. I continue to take comfort in the fact they they knew love and warmth as they crossed. Their little bodies had just endured too much to be able to overcome the odds stacked against them. We are continuing to see improvements, furiends! Amazing improvements that I dont think anybody could have predicted. As much as my discussion with the North Carolina chapter of the Humane Society left a taste like spoiled tuna in my mouth, they made an excellent point, one corroborated by the regular visits conducted by the state veterinarian: this shelter is too small to accommodate their intakes. They have 9 cages for cats, thats it. I cant begin to guess why kittens are placed in dirty feral runs, but facts are facts: there is not enough space. Residents of Rutherford have asked for better facilities. The state has cited that better facilities are necessary. A grant for the facilities was offered and then returned because city council members would not provide their support on more than one item. It is time to escalate the pressure.
