Furry Friends Animal Rescue rescued a four-paw declawed kitty from the Mesquite Shelter last Monday. She had been brought in as a stray and held at the shelter for five days unclaimed, just long enough to get sick. Poor Phoenix threw up in the car ride on the way to her foster home and several times after that. She wasnt eating and was quickly becoming dehydrated. She was given fluids and force fed; however, by Friday she was very ill and lifeless. Fearing liver issues brought on by all the stress she had been through, she was taken to the vet on Friday. An examination and blood work revealed that her liver and kidneys were fine - the bad news was that she had a high fever and a severe viral infection. Her foster mom took these pictures of her today (Saturday). She still has a temperature of 104.7 and is feeling very puny, but she is getting fluids and the medicine she needs to get better and as soon as the viral infection has run its course, she should make a full recovery. However, this will cost a lot and FFAR needs help paying for Phoenixs vet bill. If Phoenix is well enough to come home on Monday, the vet costs will be in the $550-$600 range. If she has to stay another day or two beyond that, they could escalate to $800 or even higher. This is one of the biggest struggles rescue groups face and its been a tough year. Many cats go into the shelters healthy and come out sick. Especially during kitten season, almost all shelters are overcrowded and ripe for breeding stress and disease. Most of the time, these issues are treatable by the foster at a minimal expense, but they can be costly when the animal needs extended veterinarian care.
