Further decisions on EU sanctions against Russia to depend on situation in east Ukraine - Kocijancic Brussels, October 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – EU snctions against Russia could be reviewed after continuous monitoring is established in eastern Ukraine and depending on the situation on the ground, Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, told Interfax on Friday. When asked to comment on the possible tightening of EU sanctions against Russia if Russian-supported separatist fighters take Mariupol or Donetsk airport, she said that EU restrictive measures remained under constant review and could be changed in the light of new information and new developments. Kocijancic said that the EU was closely monitoring the situation on the ground and the implementation of the Minsk protocol. She said the EU urged all parties to ensure the implementation of the protocol, including the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement. She noted that as it was again stated on September 30 after a meeting of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives that based on continuous monitoring and evaluation, and depending on the situation on the ground, the European Commission and the European External Action Service could be asked to prepare proposals for possible changes in sanctions. Bloomberg reported on October 2 that the EU was ready to impose additional sanctions against Russia if militants in southeastern Ukraine establish control over Donetsk airport and Mariupol. The agency referred to a source familiar with German government policy, who also said that such actions by the militants would have unpredictable consequences.
