Further to our United problem...apparently we just got caught in a policy that they began phasing in about 2 years ago. Another way for airlines to gouge money from people. We booked our tickets months in advance, and did choose our seats, but apparently that changed when we were all shuffled to middle seats. The question remains, who the heck wants to sit next to an unaccompanied child...especially one who is a bit nervous about flying? I guess it will be like everything else in this country, it will take a lawsuit to change it. One case of some poor kid getting inappropriately touched, and then will it happen. Until then parents, expect to have to beg with gate attendants, flight attendants and fellow passengers (who may or may not be grumpy douchebags) to sit next to your child.
