Further to our warning in the November 21 edition of The Young Witness - it appears this scam is affecting local people. People who receive one of these emails should log on to the State Debt Recovery Office website – sdro.nsw.gov.au – and enter the penalty or infringement number and offence date to check the validity of their fine. They can also phone the SDRO call centre directly on 1300 655 805 to determine whether the fine is real or a scam. In addition to ensuring you triple check the validity of the email, if you find that the email is a scam, please make sure you report it to the relevant authorities – police, Fair Trading and the Australian Government’s SCAMwatch website. Anyone with information concerning these scams is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Young Police on 6382 1899.
